The công nghệ working behind the scenes is termed as “Any
CAD”, which basically is lượt thích a translator, but still maintains the live connectivity with the native CAD program (don’t ask me how, it is an Autodesk trade secret). So files from the software such as Solid
Works, Pro/ENGINEER, Creo, NX, CATIA etc. Can be inserted directly in Inventor while still maintaining the live links with the native program.

Let’s now look at the two scenarios where this process will be used.

Inserting Components in an Inventor Assembly

This is the first thing that comes to lớn my mind where the user maywant lớn use a model from competitive design software. The mã sản phẩm that I will used here is created in the “Trial” version of Creo 3.0 (that’s the only trail software I could get my hands on, Solid

The following is the procedure from here on:

1. Click on Place Component tool và select Pro/ENGINEER and Creo Parametric Files (*.prt*,*.asm*) from the files of type list.

2. Double-click on the file you need to lớn place; the Import dialog box is displayed, as shown below:

3. By default, Convert Model is selected in this dialog box, which is the way it used lớn be till Inventor 2015 where the models were converted into Inventor models. But now, you can select Reference Model, which will maintain the live connectivity with the native design software. So select Reference Model and then click OK.

Tip: You can also click on the Select tab & click Load Model khổng lồ temporarily load the mã sản phẩm in the Inventor assembly to lớn preview it.

4. The part is inserted into Inventor assembly. You can now go and apply all the constraints/relationships lớn assemble it with other components. The figure below shows the assembly & the browser with the two copies of the Creo part assembled.

Now, if the components is changed in the native software, you will automatically see the Update Required icons on the components in the browser tree & also Local Update button will be highlighted in the quick access toolbar, as shown below.

Issues Faced

Alright, so obviously as Any
CAD is a new (remember magical?) technology, everything did not go as smoothly as I expected. The first issue I faced was every time I saved the Creo file, it incremented the file extension with a number (hub-185951.prt.1, hub-185951.prt.2, hub-185951.prt.3….). Obviously, it is not an Inventor problem, it is a Creo problem. But that meant that I had to lớn rename the incremented file to the number that I used while inserting in Inventor. So the “live connectivity” wasn’t that “live” anymore with PTC Creo. Note that this will not be an issue in other software such as Solid
Works, NX or CATIA.

The other issue that I faced was that every time I made any change to the model, the constraints in Inventor started playing up. For example, when I changed the overall dimensions of the model, the Insert constraint selection on the Creo part was lost, although I did not actually change the dimension of that face. Also, when I changed the number of features in the pattern, the Creo part face selected khổng lồ apply the Insert constraint was changed in the Inventor assembly.

Opening Parts in Inventor

1. Invoke the Open tool and select Pro/ENGINEER và Creo Parametric Files (*.prt*,*.asm*) from the files of type list.

Issues Faced

Similar khổng lồ the issues in assembly, when I changed one of the diameters of the hub in Creo, the direct editing feature had issues. However, the other Inventor features did not have any issue. But the good thing was that if I only changed the number of features in the pattern in Creo, everything updated fine in Inventor.

My Verdict

After doing testing for a few days, I can definitely say that it is a fantastic step forward from Autodesk. This công nghệ is surely a great enhancement và will help the collaborative workflow that was really needed in the kiến thiết world. However, being the first version of the technology, there are issues (remember it is magic at the over of the day). I am sure in coming months and years, this will be improved & the teething troubles will be fixed.
